Traditions are one of the most essential aspects of the holiday season for many households. Holiday traditions provide a unique opportunity to lay aside the ordinary business of the year and join together to celebrate, whether it’s gathering for a family meal, exchanging gifts, or attending a special event.

While some may believe that residing in a senior living community means abandoning holiday traditions, this is far from the case. It might even be an opportunity to start a few new ones and with new found family and friends.

It is one of the most enjoyable aspects of living here. You are not sitting at home alone.

“You have a whole community and a sense of family here,”

“If a resident doesn’t have family in town, one may find them.”

“All residents and their families, as well as our staff celebrate together”

said Elizabeth Johnsons, Program Director for Blue Skies Home, a retirement community near San Marcos, California. “Some people may be disappointed that they aren’t at home for the holidays, but it’s the complete opposite here: there’s so much to do and so much fun, and we even have a lot of activities going on throughout the holiday season.”

Residents in Blue Skies Home, for example, can enjoy festive musical performances, door decoration competitions, and songs performed by visiting primary school students during the winter holiday season.

Family and visitors are welcome to visit the senior living facility. Private dining rooms can be hired, and any special foods requested can be prepared by the communal chef.

The holidays can be a lonely time for those who do not have visiting relatives or loved ones. However, in a senior living community, there is a strong sense of community.

“No one is alone over the holidays here, which is one of the best parts about living here. You’re not sitting at home alone; you’ve got an entire community and a sense of family,” Elizabeth said. “If a resident doesn’t have relatives in town, a neighbor will often welcome them over to their family’s house instead; even the staff, we all feel like we’re part of everyone’s extended family; it’s a wonderful feeling, especially during the holidays”.

Individual floors of the community will frequently hold their own little celebrations. Elizabeth recalls a holiday potluck on one floor and a trip downtown to see the lights and decorations on another.

Senior communities are not just filled with seasonal cheer during the winter holidays. Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, Memorial Day — the calendar is jam-packed with events all year. Blue Skies Home, in particular, seeks to accept all forms of festivals because residents may have diverse beliefs and traditions.

“We try to make every holiday memorable,”

Elizabeth said.

“We have folks here who are Christians,  so we can celebrate Christmas, Easter Sunday and Three Kings. We try to make every holiday exciting for them and we also enjoy and engage with them in these religious activities.”

The holiday season is a fantastic illustration of how active residents’ lives are in Blue Skies. But the action does not end after the holidays, residents are kept occupied and involved all year through year-round wellness activities, organizations, and classes.

While some people may believe that residents of senior living communities spend their days “sitting in a rocking chair”, Elizabeth stressed that this is not the case.

“Nobody is sitting at home alone, there are so many friendships right here, everywhere you look; these people are always busy having meaningful conversations; they can even have their kids come here and not have to worry about preparing food, baking, or hosting pressure, because we take care of it all; they’re free to enjoy spending quality time with their kids and grandkids without having to worry about getting the house cleaned or going grocery shopping.”

“We want this to be an enjoyable community not just for our residents, but also their families. And I truly believe it’s a one-of-a-kind event.”
